Police praise K-9 unit for safe arrest

VACAVILLE, CA

Vito, a four-legged member of the Vacaville Police Department, was on patrol with his partner Officer Dave Spencer when a stolen vehicle was identified near Alamo Drive and Nut Tree Road at about 12:20 p.m. Sunday, according to police.

After following the vehicle for a short distance, the driver, Vacaville resident Demarko Massingale, reportedly exited the vehicle and attempted to flee.

Spencer reported informing Massingale that Vito would apprehend him if he continued to run, which caused the suspect to stop and submit to being arrested without incident.

"This is just another example of how K-9 partners provide the public and police officers with added resources and safety, as well as a deterrent to criminal activity," police Sgt. Rick Elm said in a prepared statement.
