The San Mateo City Council will hold a special meeting tonight to appoint a new councilmember to fill the seat left vacant by newly elected San Mateo County Supervisor Carole Groom.

The 14 applicants addressed the council at another special meeting Wednesday night, City Clerk Norma Gomez said.

The new councilmember will be chosen by Mayor Brandt Grotte, Deputy Mayor John Lee, Councilwoman Jan Epstein and Councilman Jack Matthews. If there is a tie among the council, Grotte will make the final decision, according to Lee.

Lee said the council was impressed by the applicants' presentations Wednesday.

"They all did an outstanding job," he said.

In December, Groom was appointed to the District 2 Board of Supervisors seat. She had previously served on the San Mateo City Council.
