Chase ends in flipped police car

Hayward police shot the driver of a stolen pickup, after a high-speed chase in which a patrol car flipped over.

It began Friday morning when officers spotted a stolen pickup off Clawiter Avenue.

They say the suspect sped away, drove against oncoming traffic, and lost control on West A Street.

When police went to arrest the driver, they say he tried to run them over.

Two officers shot at the truck, hitting the driver in the arm.

Witnesses were shaken.

"You know, I heard shots and I kinda ducked back a little bit, then I came back out and looked again, and heard more shots, and I ducked back a little bit more," Matthew Abbott said.

The driver went to the hospital was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on routine administrative leave and were not injured.

During the chase, another officer suffered minor injuries when a patrol car struck a curb and flipped over.
