Healthy and tasty convenience foods

SAN FRANCISCO

There's no disputing that convenience foods can save a lot of time. Good housekeeping compared nutrition labels, picked out the healthiest ones and then put them to the taste test.

"We looked at nutrition labels of over a thousand products," said Delia Hammock, Good Housekeeping Institute.

Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers Ziti and Meat Sauce was one of the favorites. It comes in a plastic container with its own little strainer so you can cook the pasta and the sauce separately and mix them together.

Cedar's chickpea salad was a favorite side dish. It comes with chickpeas, vegetables and dried cranberries. Just a half cup provides one-fourth of your daily fiber. For a quick snack, Good Housekeeping likes Blue Horizon organic spring rolls.

"These spring rolls cook very quickly in the microwave, and we found three varieties that really taste great too. Three of them only have about 150 calories," said Delia Hammock, Good Housekeeping Institute.

If you buy prewashed greens, Good Housekeeping suggests looking for darker greens like romaine, arugula and watercress. They offer more nutrition than lighter greens.
