The fire was reported at about 10:40 p.m. Sunday at the old site of Green Valley Middle School at 3630 Ritchie Rd., and was controlled by about 2:45 a.m. today, Rogers said.
Units from the Cordelia and Fairfield fire departments were the first to arrive at the scene of the blaze, according to Rogers, who said the firefighters tried to go inside the building before the roof started to cave in, forcing the firefighters to retreat back outside.
Firefighters from Vacaville, Benicia and Vallejo also assisted at the scene, Rogers said. No firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze.
The new Green Valley Middle School was built in 2004 further east in Fairfield at 1350 Gold Hill Rd., according to the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District.
Rogers said there's been "quite a bit of vandalism over the years" at the old site.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation, according to Rogers, who said it was "suspicious in nature, but we won't be starting any type of investigation until daylight."
