At 1:39 a.m. an officer on patrol spotted a gold Honda Accord on Port Chicago Highway and East Olivera Road. When the officer ran the car's license plate, he found that the Honda had been reported stolen out of Pleasant Hill, Cerletti said.

The officer followed the Honda up Port Chicago Highway while he waited for other officers to arrive. But before backup got there, the Honda "made an evasive turn" onto Floyd Lane and stopped, and the officer pulled up behind it, Cerletti said.

As soon as the officer stopped, the driver of the Honda sped off and re-entered Port Chicago Highway heading toward Grant Street, Cerletti said.

As the Honda re-entered Port Chicago Highway, it got two flat tires, but the driver kept going.

By that time other officers had joined the pursuit.

They chased the Honda to Grant Street, where it turned and went up the northbound Highway 242 off-ramp, heading south in the northbound lanes, Cerletti said.

"We terminated our pursuit because we don't drive the wrong way on highways," Cerletti said.

Police later found the Honda abandoned on Highway 242 just before the Concord Avenue on-ramp and a search for the driver was called off.

Police do not have a description of the driver.
