The officer was on his bike when he got into an argument with a motorist -- who police say had a knife, and used it. It happened in the Lower Haight on Tuesday afternoon.

Police is not sure how the whole thing started, but it ended with the suspect in custody and the police officer injured.

The officer was off-duty riding a bicycle and wearing cycling gear. He got into a violent confrontation with a motorist.

Nicole Lucas was watching from the windows of hair salon on the corner at Haight and Steiner Streets.

"I saw the bike rider irate, and I don't know if he pulled the car open or if the driver got out, but they were throwing punches at each other, getting into a fight. I don't know if at that point the stabbing happened," said Lucas.

She said two other witnesses used their cell phones to take pictures of the car's license plate. Police credit that information with helping them quickly catch up with the suspect.

He was pulled over just a couple blocks away, and taken into custody.

Police found a knife in his car, and the injured off-duty officer was taken to the hospital, and is expected to be okay.

"It appeared to be in the upper chest area, and they were determined to be non-life threatening at the scene," said Sgt. Lyn Tomioka from the San Francisco Police Department.

The suspect has not been charged and the police declined to identify him. He is not a San Francisco resident, and they have yet to release the name of the off-duty officer.
