Low cloud ceilings and low visibility, combined with the wind and rain, were expected to delay flights into and out of the airport until at least 8 p.m., Ginty said.

However, operations were smoother at the airport Tuesday than they were in previous days, when the weather was stormier, Ginty said.

"The last few days there was more rain, so delays were a little longer," he said. "So this is a better day than the last four, weather-wise and delay-wise."

Oakland International Airport reported up to 20-minute delays to some departing flights this afternoon, but spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said it is unclear if delays are due to Bay Area weather or storms elsewhere.

Passengers and others headed to the airport are encouraged to check airline Web sites for updates, she said.

No delays were reported at Mineta San Jose International Airport.

"It's been wet, but nothing to interfere with normal operations," airport spokesman David Vossbrink said.
