U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Sean D. Diamond died after an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle, according to the Department of Defense.
He was assigned to the 610th Engineer Support Company, 14th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade out of Fort Lewis, Wash.
Diamond began his military service Sept. 2, 1987, and rejoined the Army in 2000 after a short break, according to the Fort Lewis public affairs office.
He earned several awards and decorations during his career, including the Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal and Presidential Unit Citation Award.
Diamond is survived by his wife and children and his mother Sally Wiley, who lives in Garnerville, Nev., Nev. Gov. Jim Gibbons said in a statement.
