Organizers say it may never be held again because of rising production costs and a drop in sponsorship. They also say there is an increased competition from other music festivals in the Bay Area.

The Blues Festival began in 1973 and became the longest running event of its kind in the nation.

Promoters are already planning a Smooth Jazz Festival at Fort Mason during the dates once reserved for the Blues Festival.
