Newsom's office confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the mayor and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are expecting a child.

The mayor fielded questions about fatherhood today following a news conference about improvements to Civic Center Plaza, saying that the baby is due later this year, possibly sometime in September.

Newsom welcomed "any advice on diapers, any advice on feeding times, any advice on names," or other topics related to a new child, and said he was already receiving tips on his Twitter account. Newsom is also welcoming suggestions on his Facebook account.

The news was leaked by Valleywag, part of the Gawker network of gossip Web sites based in New York.

"It was not the way we wanted it to come out," Newsom said today. He said some extended family members learned of the pregnancy through TV reports.

Newsom singled out one family member he will be leaning on in the months ahead.

"All I know is, my mother-in-law is now my most important person outside of my wife because I know how helpful she can be in giving me time to sleep," he said.

Newsom launched an exploratory campaign for governor in July.
