/*NUMMI*/ executives confirmed late Friday that they have asked their union workers to start taking unpaid furlough days one day a week, or face the possibility of layoffs.

They have also asked the United Auto Workers to open new contract talks earlier than scheduled.

In a statement, NUMMI said the furloughs are "the best way for team members to share the burden of cost reduction," but that layoffs are something "NUMMI does not want to do."
