The chase began at about 7 p.m. as Pittsburg police were following up on a call at a house on Jensen Circle in Pittsburg.

Police contacted a man at the home and he allegedly fled, prompting the pursuit. The chase ended in the 9000 block of Carquinez Scenic Drive in the small, unincorporated town of Port Costa.

Lee did not have details about what led to the shooting but said it happened at about 7:35 p.m.

The man was taken to Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez, where he was pronounced dead at about 9 p.m.

His name was being withheld this morning because his family hadn't been notified of his death, a Contra Costa deputy coroner said.

Pittsburg police, the sheriff's office and the Contra Costa County District Attorney's office are investigating the shooting.
