A man living at the home at 1065 Ponti Road, near Skellenger Lane in rural Napa County, reported the fire around 1:20 a.m. and initially tried to put it out himself. He and a woman got out safely, Wilson said.

When firefighters arrived, the roof and the attic of the 5,500-square-foot, single-family home were on fire, Wilson said.

Approximately 40 firefighters responded and had the fire contained by about 2:15 a.m. One firefighter suffered a minor back injury, Wilson said.

Most of the home's interior sustained only smoke damage, Wilson said. Damage was estimated at $150,000.

Firefighters from Cal Fire, Rutherford, St. Helena, Dry Creek and Soda Canyon responded, Wilson said.

The cause remains under investigation.
