Vasco Road, a 15-mile, winding two-lane roadway that connects residential communities in Brentwood and Oakley to employment centers in Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin, has become a major commute corridor.
Although double fine zones, increased enforcement and other safety measures have resulted in two years without fatalities, the road has been the site of multiple fatal crashes.
The money from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, which is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will be used to lengthen a passing lane and build a 1-mile concrete barrier in the Brushy Peak area, one of the most treacherous stretches of the road.
Additional money for the project will come from Proposition 1B funds, developer fees and a federal earmark from the city of Brentwood. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2010.
