People in the little City of Clayton just outside of Concord, where things like this are so unusual, remained shocked Saturday evening.

It happened in the middle of the downtown square around 11:00 a.m.

Witnesses told ABC7 a man was stabbed at the post office. They say the killer then ran away. Several good Samaritans chased him down and tackled the man on the steps of Ed's Mudville Grill.

They held the suspect until police arrived.

"The good Samaritans were able to subdue the suspect with the help of some individuals in the restaurant. And, by the time I pulled around to help the suspect was subdued in front of the restaurant and no struggle occurred," said Clayton resident Victor.

Four agencies are investigating the murder. It happened on federal property so postal investigators are working the case. Officials from the Concord and Clayton police departments, as well as the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department, are also investigating the murder.

Information about the victim and suspect has not been released. But, word is spreading among the small city about the person who died. No witnesses at the scene knew the victim's identity and simply seemed shocked at what happened.

There has not been a murder in Clayton since June of 1995.
