Trauma-proof your kids

It's natural for parents to want to protect their children from trauma. Dr. Peter Levine, author of "Trauma-Proofing Your Kids," explains the baisc steps needed to instill resilience and confidence in our kids.

There are three basic steps parents can use to instill resilience:

1) Develop a calming presence. Parents should check their response to any situation. If they are tense, nervous or apprehensive their children will sense this and react. Children pick up major cues from their parents. Calm reassurance will sooth their child.

2) Communicate develop a dialogue with your children. Ask open ended questions Where do you notice it hurts? How does it feel? Direct your children to the sensation their body is experiencing. Feeling vocabulary box helps children put a name to what they are feeling example - (cold/warm/hot)(relaxed /calm /peaceful)

3) Create quality time- restore resilience through exercise, play, art and rhymes. Spend time at the park running. Imagine/ draw a happy place, draw a body and use color to express feelings within the bodycreate rhymes "Imagine that you're at your favorite place,It's quite and safe in your own special space".
