Consumers are taking worn out shoes to the repair shop, instead of buying new ones and new cars are being taken to a mechanic or the owners are learning how to make the repairs themselves.

"Maybe it would be people coming in for air freshener or car washes, now they're saying, 'hey can you help me put the windshield wipers on,' or 'how hard is it to change a set of brakes,'" Autozone area sales manager Jim Kelley said.

An oil change can cost $40 at a shop; doing it at home costs half of that.
