A consumer group in Britain says 1 million pieces of luggage were lost in 2007 at the world's airports, another 42 million bags were mishandled - a record.

The Air Transport Users Council wants airlines to do a better job of compensating passengers for lost luggage. The group says on too many occasions that does not happen, often because airlines require passengers to have receipts for items inside lost bags.

Those losing luggage on domestic flights can receive compensation up to $3,300; on international flights, the rate is $9.07 a pound.
