After four years as Berkeley's chief, Hambleton said he would retire this summer.

Before being named police chief, the 55-year-old Hambleton spent more than three decades working a number of assignments in the department.

He took over as chief in March of 2005.

Berkeley now joins several other Bay Area police departments that are currently searching for a new chief.

Oakland, San Francisco, Palo Alto, South San Francisco and San Francisco City College are also trying to fill openings for police chief.
