Officers responded to the 2600 block of Holland Street at about 8:40 p.m. where a 53- and 54-year-old woman, both caretakers for residents, reported being held against their will and assaulted by a young man who came to the door saying he was selling magazine subscriptions, police said.

The victims told officers the suspect came to the residence at about 8:10 p.m. and was allowed in for a drink of water. The suspect then left but allegedly returned about 30 minutes later, entering the residence on his own.

The suspect reportedly confronted the two women, and while holding them against their will attempted to sexually assault one of them. The other was able to contact police, which prompted the suspect to flee on foot, according to police.

During a search of the area, police reported seeing a pedestrian enter a vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. One of the occupants matched the suspect description and was detained until police obtained a positive identification of him as the suspect in the assault.

The juvenile, who allegedly refused to make any statement to police, was booked at the Hillcrest Juvenile Center for burglary, kidnapping, false imprisonment and assault with intent to rape, according to police.

Anyone who might have been in the area of the assault and witnessed activity possibly connected to the crime is asked to report it to the San Mateo Police Investigations Unit at (650) 522-7650 or anonymously through the police secret witness line at (650) 522-7575.

Police are reminding all community members to not let strangers into their homes, to develop a system of identifying people at the door without opening it, and to verify the organization of any solicitor asking for donations or selling a product door-to-door.
