Water rationing possible for Contra Costa Co.

The district's water allotment was cut 50 percent by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation last month, the sole source of water for the district.

Officials are considering a sliding scale rationing plan -- the more people use, the more they will have to cut back. Violators will face heavy fines.

If enacted next Wednesday, rationing for 550,000 customers could begin May 1, 2009.
