The award recognizes the city's environmental initiations, such as a discussion on climate change attended by nearly 100 residents, and others available at www.redwoodcity.org/coolcity, according to spokesman Malcolm Smith.

Other civic engagement efforts include the "Hoover Area Connection" study session, the "Cool Earth" campaign and "YO! It's Youth Outdoors" initiative, Smith said.

Sustainable San Mateo County was created in 1992 by residents who wanted to educate the community about sustainability, according to Smith.
