The sailors were taking part in a race to the Farallone Islands when their boat capsized in choppy seas around 8:30 Saturday night.
They put out a distress call on a portable radio. They were clinging to their capsized hull and drifting as darkness set in.
"We probably were searching for about an hour out there. But, they did have a hand-held spotlight out there as well, which was getting our attention. They were a certain distance, but what they had on them was sufficient for the time frame that they were out there," said Petty Officer Brett Bunner.
The men were treated for hypothermia but are otherwise reported to be in good condition.
The Coast Guard says having the right equipment made a big difference in helping the pair survive in 50-degree water.
