Police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said the chase began around 11:15 a.m. after a San Rafael police officer to pull over the van in the area of Point San Pedro Road and Beach Road after seeing it driven recklessly.

The driver refused to yield and a chase began. During the chase, the driver struck two patrol cars and a police motorcycle, Roherbacher said. The motorcycle officer jumped into the brush and avoided serious injury, but the motorcycle was totaled, Rohrbacher said.

The pursuit ended when the van crashed into a power pole in the area of Point San Pedro Road and Summit Avenue around 11:30 a.m., Rohrbacher said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

One officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.
