The victim reported the incident at about 8:30 p.m. Friday after she fled the parking lot of the Terra Linda Safeway store on Las Gallinas Avenue.

According to police, the woman had been loading groceries in the back seat of her car when a man who appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s approached her from behind, placed his hands around her waist and began thrusting his pelvis against her buttocks.

The victim screamed and the suspect took off running through the parking lot toward nearby storefronts, police said. He was possibly seen driving off in a dark late 1980s Honda or Acura.

The suspect was described as a white male standing at 5 feet and 10 inches, between 170 and 180 pounds with brown medium-length hair and a thin beard along his jaw line. He was wearing a dark blue or black v-neck sweater, a white undershirt, dark gray jeans or sweatpants and brown leather shoes.

The woman was not injured in the assault, police said.

Police are asking anyone able to identify the suspect or convey information regarding this incident to contact the San Rafael Police Department at (415) 485-3000 or call Crime Stoppers at (415) 472-2746.
