First, three of the children followed the dog down the cliff near Jamestown Avenue and Harney Way around 7:30 p.m., but they got stuck about 300 feet up from the bottom, fire Lt. Ken Smith said.

Then two mothers followed them to help, but also got stuck, and a dad and a 15-year-old boy also followed and got stuck.

They called the fire department around 8:30 p.m., which dispatched a cliff rescue team, set up a ladder that reached higher than the families and hooked a rope to lower them one-by-one, Smith said.

Firefighters had rescued all of them safely by 10:30 p.m.

None of them were injured and "it was hugs all around," he said.
