According to Officer Rob Tuazon, 42-year-old Emelio Navarro confronted his wife Maria at about 8 a.m. near their home in unincorporated San Leandro.

Maria Navarro, 39, was driving a Chevy pickup truck on Mateo Street at Green Court when her husband approached, opened the driver's side door and an argument began, Tuazon said.

Scared, Maria Navarro began to drive off, while her husband tried to hold on to the truck, but fell to the ground and sustained a fatal head injury, according to Tuazon.

Navarro's wife stopped and called 911, and she spoke with CHP officers through a translator, Tuazon said. She was not arrested. Earlier reports that she drove from the scene were incorrect, he said.

Tuazon said investigators are still trying to piece together what happened, but from what they can glean from Maria Navarro's statements, she may have been returning to the home to pick up one of the couple's children for school, after earlier taking their other child to school.

It was unclear what the argument was about, Tuazon said.
