Free prom dresses were given out the Mayfair Community Center in San Jose. It is an idea that is taking hold around the country because so many families are having a hard time making ends meet.
Madison Nguyen, the San Jose city council member who launched the donation drive, was thrilled to get hundreds of dresses.
"Obviously the economy has affected a lot of families, especially families on the east side. And, so one of the reasons we are putting this together is to alleviate some of the financial burden these families have to go through," she said Saturday.
Those at the giveaway said they really appreciate the chance to go to their high school prom in style.
