The man, the lone occupant of the boat, had been thrown in the water and was unable to get back onto the boat due to exhaustion, cold water and strong winds, according to the sheriff's department.

The man was wearing a flotation device, however, which kept him afloat. The deputies helped to right the sailboat and brought it and the man to safety. The man declined medical attention, and the boat was not damaged, according to the sheriff's department.

The man could have easily drowned without the flotation device, according to the sheriff's department, which is urging boaters to be fully equipped with all required safety equipment and to check that everything is functional before they go out on the water.
