Affordable home trends under $20

Personalize your decor with simple ideas for $20 or less. Kim Turnbull, associate editor of MyHomeIdeas.com, shares her ideas for sprucing up your home in a tough economy and getting through the recession in style.

Decorating Tips:

Think Long-term:
Make smart investments with your decorating choices like selecting durable fabric. What retailers are calling "outdoor" fabrics also work great inside and are long lasting, easy to clean, and affordable.

Suggested Items: Outdoor pillows and fabric swatches.

Multitask:
As in the workplace, everybody, including furniture, needs to do the work of two or three these days. Look for pieces that are versatile and do double duty.

Suggested Items: Small square ottoman (size of a small side table).

Revamp Investments:
A little can go a long way and just because you can't afford a total makeover, find comfort in the small accents. Surround yourself with cozy fabrics and warm memories.

Suggested Items: Throw blanket and family frames.

Lighten the Mood:
Even if you can't splurge on much, keep the outlook positive with a few touches of whimsy and (affordable) indulgence.

Suggested Items: Gold lamp, floral lamp shade, mercury glass votive holders, and paint samples.

About Kim Turnbull:
Someday, associate editor Kim Turnbull plans to settle down, buy a house, and even have a pet of her very own. Until then, she wings it and feeds the neighbor's cat leftover turkey from the porch of the rented duplex she is trying to affordably decorate.
