Esmeralda Fletes was struck in the 26600 block of Encinal Road at about 7:50 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect vehicle continued northbound on Encinal Road and did not stop to provide assistance, according to the CHP.

CHP Officer Kari Dillon said the suspect vehicle struck Fletes in a driveway as she was playing with her 6-year-old cousin.

The cousin said the vehicle was dark-colored, possibly black, but no further details about the vehicle or driver have been determined, Dillon said.

Fletes was flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center where she died at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Monterey County coroner's office.

The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call the CHP at (831) 796-2100.
