The Department of Water Resources says new research suggests the delta smelt are not as affected by massive pumping as previously thought. They instead are finding refuge from the pumping on a flooded Delta island.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service imposed pumping restrictions in December, after a court found pumping contributed to the decline of the delta smelt fish.

Pumping from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta supplies some 25 million Californians with water.
