The stabbing was reported at about 10:35 p.m. in the 1200 block of Ironwood Drive. The area is a quiet, residential neighborhood near a playground and a school, Silva said.

When police arrived, they found Benjamin Packer sitting in the driveway of his home, police said.

Inside the home, officers found Packer's father, 42-year-old Dennis Packer, suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was taken to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch, where he later died from his injuries, according to police.

Benjamin Packer was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility, police said. His bail has been set at more than $2 million, according to a county jail official.

Investigators were continuing to interview people about the case today, but still didn't know what led up to the stabbing, Silva said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Brentwood police Detective Aguiar at (925) 634-6911.

The slaying is the city's first homicide this year, Silva said.
