Reeder, also chair of the Languages Department, has been biking 20 miles roundtrip from Santa Rosa to the SSU campus in Rohnert Park four or five days a week since 1998.

The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition has named him Sonoma County Bicycle Commuter of 2009.

During his language lessons, Reeder also encourages students to cycle more and shows how to calculate their carbon offset and compute how much is saved by cycling instead of driving to the campus.

"The fact that I commute by bike brings our family closer together," Reeder said in a news release.

He said he, his wife and son share one family car.

"Anything we plan to use the car for - that's not part of the workday - we do together," Reeder said.

SSU is participating in Bike to Work Day with an energizer station to hydrate bicyclists at the south entrance to the campus near the flagpole on East Cotati Avenue. There will be free gifts, food and refreshments and a raffle for prizes, SSU spokeswoman Jean Wasp said.

SSU's police and parking services will register bikes for free.

Bicycle maintenance and repair will be available for SSU students, faculty and staff.
