At about 1:55 a.m., an officer came upon a man, tentatively being identified as Yemane Kidane Hadgue, who was lying in the center divider of El Camino Real near McCormick Drive, Lt. Wahid Kazem said.

Hadgue, who had been wearing dark clothing, was still alive when the officer arrived, but he ended up dying on the roadway.

Hadgue had family in Colorado and Ethiopia, but he is thought to be a transient in the area, according to the Police Department.

The vehicle involved in the hit-and-run could have front-end damage and possibly a broken windshield, Kazem said. There were no witnesses and no suspects have been identified.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office responded to the incident, coroner investigator Kris Barbrich said. Officials with the medical examiner's office have not, however, officially released the victim's identity.

Anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run is asked to contact the Santa Clara Police Department at (408) 615-4700.
