Battalion Chief Mark Basque said the fire at 1922 Santa Monica Court east of downtown Santa Rosa was reported around 7:35 p.m. Firefighters arrived within three minutes and found the detached wood frame garage burning, Basque said.

The blaze threatened the main house on the property and was extending toward the home next door, Basque said. The resident of the main house was not home at the time of the fire.

Seventeen firefighters controlled the blaze within 15 minutes. The fire destroyed the garage and caused moderate heat damage to the home next door. Property damage is estimated at $30,000, Basque said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
