Officers responded to the 2600 block of Gaynor Avenue at 11 p.m. where a family was reportedly taken hostage in their home and robbed by three suspects, two of them armed, Richmond police Lt. Mike Gormley said.

A husband and wife, their friend and a child were reportedly returning home when three men forced their way inside and bound the four victims at gunpoint with electrical cords and belts, Gormley said. The suspects stole ATM cards and comic books and fled the scene.

One of the suspects was described as a black man with shoulder-length dreadlocks, 18 to 20 years old, wearing a white T-shirt and a black jacket with red writing. Witnesses said he was carrying a silver semi-automatic handgun. A second suspect was described as a black man, 19 to 22 years old with a shaved head, carrying a blue-steel semi-automatic handgun. Witnesses had not been able to provide a description of the third suspect.

Within minutes, Richmond police were responding to a report of an attempted home invasion nearby in the 700 block of Ventura Street in East Richmond, Gormley said. Preliminary reports indicate that the robbery was attempted by two men, one of whom was described as a black man with dreadlocks, wearing a black hoodie and dark jeans and carrying a black automatic handgun. A description of the second man was not provided.

Police have not determined if the two crimes were perpetrated by the same suspects, Gormley said.

Police in San Pablo were possibly investigating a home invasion robbery that occurred at around the same time, Gormley said, though an officer able to confirm the report was not immediately available to do so.
