Police said the officer was attending a training exercise on May 5 and left the 6-year-old Belgian Malinois unattended in his vehicle. The dog became unresponsive and the officer brought it to the Bay Area Veterinary Emergency Clinic in San Leandro where it later died.

Police said in addition to presenting a criminal case to the district attorney's office, the Police Department is conducting an internal investigation into the cause of death.
