The Alternative Learning Academy opened on Lawlor Street near 98th Avenue two years ago. In March, the school board voted to change its name to Barack Obama Academy to honor America's 44th president.
About 35 seventh and eighth graders attend Obama Academy. Many of them struggled to achieve in more traditional middle school settings.
