The crash happened around 10:45 p.m. at the intersection of Edwards Avenue and Sunkist Drive.

Police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason said a preliminary investigation indicates that a 1992 Honda Accord crossed over the double-yellow line on Edward Avenue and slammed into a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Jetta was taken to Highland Hospital where he later died.

The man behind the wheel of the Accord, an 18-year-old Oakland resident, suffered only minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Thomason said it does not appear that alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation, and the name of the man killed has not yet been released.
