Close Up Foundations, a Washington based nonprofit, organized the program and was responsible for selecting students based on academic achievements and a demonstrated desire to exact positive changes in their communities, according to a statement released Friday by the San Francisco Police Department. Kids were selected from Horace Mann and Visitacion Valley middle schools.

The trip to the U.S. capitol was made possible by donations from the San Francisco Police Officers Association, Officers for Justice, San Francisco Sheriff's Association, San Francisco Latin Police Officers Association, the San Francisco Pride Alliance and individual donors.
