Documents to initiate a legal split were filed at the Bucks County Courthouse in Doylestown, Pa., Monday afternoon, a source close to the situation told the magazine. The couple has been married for 10 years.

Messages left for the Gosselins' spokeswoman were not immediately returned.

The report comes in the wake of a tumultuous several months for the reality TV couple, who have dotted the tabloid headlines amid rumors of infidelity and speculation about the break-up of their marriage.

The media coverage made the Gosselins, parents of a set of 8-year-old twins and 5-year-old sextuplets, one of the country's most discussed couple even before the reality show's fifth season premiere, which netted nearly 10 million viewers, and the media coverage garnered huge ratings for the show all season.

Recently, Kate and Jon hadn't been photographed often together. Kate Gosselin was shown hitting the beach with her children during a recent vacation to North Carolina, sans husband. Jon Gosselin was spotted reportedly shopping for an apartment in New York City.

And while the viewership of the show has declined in recent weeks -- only 2.9 million viewers tuned in for the last episode -- the media attention has not.

Last week, Kate Gosselin, 34, defended herself over new magazine photos that showed her presumably spanking of the sextuplets and talking to a police officer.

According to In Touch Weekly, which published the photo, the embattled mother lost her temper with daughter Leah, one of the sextuplets, after she wouldn't stop blowing a whistle while Kate Gosselin was on the phone.

Kate Gosselin responded to the brewing controversy on a statement posted on the Web site for Life & Style magazine.

"Whether the paparazzi are there or not, I am a mother first. I love my children and when they misbehave, I discipline them as I deem appropriate for the situation," she said through a statement issued by her representatives. Just one week before, it was Jon Gosselin's turn to defend the family, arguing that a comment he made about the mistreatment of the family's two German shepherd puppies was taken out of context.

A June 4 interview published on People.com in which Gosselin, 32, said that his kids often "beat" their dogs sparked an outcry of complaints to the local branch of the Humane Society.

Karel Minor, the executive director of the Humane Society of Berks County, Pa., told ABCNews.com that community members have been complaining about how the Gosselins treat their dogs. Later Minor said the investigation had been dropped because there was no "credible reason to believe in any way that there is cruelty going on."

Jon Gosselin, in a statement released to ABCNews.com, said he sought to "set the record straight" regarding the mishandling of his family pets, stating that his previous remarks about his kids were taken out of context.

Jon & Kate Face Accusations of Child Labor Violations

The Gosselin parents also found themselves under investigation by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor after allegations that they were not abiding child labor laws surfaced.

TLC, which airs "Jon & Kate Plus 8," responded saying that it "fully complies" with state laws and regulations.

Rumors of infidelity by both Jon and Kate have also landed the TV couple in hot water.

Jon Gosselin has denied having an affair since allegations of his infidelity were first reported by Us Magazine on March 18. Since then, multiple photos have emerged of Gosselin and 23-year-old school teacher Deanna Hummel, including shots of the duo allegedly vacationing in Utah together.

Sources who saw the pair together told the magazine they appeared "very cuddly."

When rumors swirled over Kate Gosselin's reported relationship with the family's bodyguard, Steve Neild, the mother of eight denied the alleged affair to People magazine.

"The next story coming out from the animals that stalk us is about our security person and his family," she said, referring to bodyguard Steve Neild. "Already the allegations they're making about me are disgusting, unthinkable, unfathomable, and I am horrified."
