The money collected goes to San Francisco's Glide Memorial Church, a favorite charity of Buffett's late wife, a former Bay Area resident.
Last year's winner, a Chinese hedge-fund manager, paid $2.1 million for the privilege. He and a few friends sat down with Buffett on Wednesday at a New York steakhouse.
