Survey planned to find neglected pools

The operation will cover about 37 square miles. Once staff members receive the results of the survey they will determine which pools need immediate attention. District technicians will then begin contacting pool owners.

Since 2007, the district's aerial surveys have cataloged more than 2,700 neglected pools. A single poorly maintained pool can produce millions of mosquitoes, according to the Santa Clara County Vector Control District.

During 2008, 445 human West Nile virus infections and 15 deaths were reported in California. The virus is transmitted by mosquito bites and causes flu-like symptoms.
