The surgeons used a process known as a "plasma exchange." The procedure filters the recipient's blood plasma and eliminates the chances of an organ rejection. Some of the patients just met for the first time Wednesday during a news conference at Georgetown University.

The transplants were performed there and at Washington Hospital Center over a four-day period in July. Doctors say it was the largest-ever kidney exchange of its kind in one city.
