The train was stalled on the track for over two hours, but has now been removed. Crews are inspecting the tracks for any damage.

Passengers on the train were evacuated onto another BART train. There are no reports of injuries. Some smoke did enter the train. Contra Costa County fire crews came to the scene, but there was no fire.

Some of the crews at the scene were divided on what it hit; one version said that a piece of the train fell off and it hit the motor causing the smoke; another crew said that there was maintenance being done to the tracks overnight and something was left on the track. This was the first morning train headed out of Walnut Creek toward San Francisco. BART chief spokesperson Linton Johnson said they are still unsure what the train struck.

Full service was restored on BART at about 7:00 a.m..
