The current group includes a former boxer and a cancer survivor.

Family members did the honors of pining badges on the brand new officers at a ceremony Friday morning.

The class of 183 men and women spent the last six months training and living together in West Sacramento.

"It's just wow, I made it, I'm here, coming in the beginning you're not too sure about anything, and wow, getting there and making it's an awesome feeling," Officer Benjamin Smith said.

Ten of the graduates grew up in the Bay Area, 41 of them will begin their CHP careers patrolling Bay Area freeways.
