The 1000 block of Garden Street, where the one-alarm fire burned, remained smoky as of 4 p.m., according to Menlo Park Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman.

"Smoke continues to be a problem," he said. "There was a nice big column of smoke originally, which is easier for us, but then the smoke started laying on the street," which makes visibility difficult.

Firefighters believe the flames originated in the backyard of 1041 Garden St. and spread to that structure before moving on to an adjacent structure at 1039 Garden St., Schapelhouman said. An East Palo Alto police dispatcher initially said the fire was at 1079 Garden St.

One person was injured in the blaze, but Schapelhouman did not know the type or extent of the injury.

About 20 firefighters responded to combat the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
