Signature drives have been organized at a half dozen schools -- including San Jose State, where classes began Tuesday.

"I really don't understand it, they're raising tuition, but at the same time cutting classes, paying teachers less -- what am i paying for right now," SJSU student Arrentino Smith said.

Cal State is facing a $584 million deficit this academic year.

Besides cutting classes, school administrators have also furloughed staff and raised student fees, to try to ease the burden.
